This is a useful word for when you are writing or speaking about society. Your status is your position in society.

Some common combinations

This is one of those words that has a number of collocations and is well-worth reading through this list:

Nowadays there are an increasing number of women who enjoy high status jobs.

Some people argue that it should be illegal for employers to enquire about the marital status of job applicants.

Some illegal immigrants attempt to claim refugee status so as not to be deported back to their country of origin.

While the legal status of women has undoubtedly improved, there is still sexual discrimination in the workplace.

One of the most important facets of education is that it allows people to improve their social status.

Some low status jobs are vital to the economy and it is arguable that people who work in these areas should be paid better.


Two special phrases

The status quo is a phrase from latin meaning the existing state of  affairs.

It is unlikely, though, that status quo will change in the foreseeable future.

A status symbol is normally a possession that gives you a special standing in society – changing the way people look at you:

The Macbook has become something of a status symbol among the professional classes.
