Top Tips for IELTS


Today’s word of the day exercise is



This is a useful word for describing figures and is in the same family as proportion and amount. You should be careful using it though because it has a specific meaning being the relationship between two numbers or amounts. Ratios are conventionally expressed in terms such as 2 to 1.

Using the word

calculate/compare If we compare the ratio of  females to males studying language at university, we see that there were approximately twice as many females as males on these courses.

increase/fall: The  ratio of medical staff to patients has fallen and this has affected the quality of care.

high/low/average: The average ratio of men to women working as lawyers was approximately 2 to 1.

of …. to We can see that the ratio of teachers to students fell by 10% during this period.
