Range – IELTS word of the day

Today’s word from the academic word list is:



  • Another very useful word that has a surprising number of meanings and uses
  • The first point to note that it is used both as a verb and noun
  • Perhaps the most common collocations/phrases are wide range and narrow range. If you want to use something else, you can consider broad range or extensive range
  • select, offer, and choose are just 3 verbs that are commonly used with range
  • common prepositions are to range from this to that, a range of choices, to be within range and to be in the range of

    dear sir, when i did exercise for the word ” appropriate” , i saw this sentence ” the first step would be to undertake a evaluation of the…..” I dont understand the structure : would be to understake. Please explain it for me. thanks a lottttt

      In “the first step would be to undertake a evaluation of the…..” all “undertake” means is “do”. There is a family of words here you should try and learn: carry out/conduct/undertake are all useful and have a similar range of meaning.
