Potential – AWL word of the day

Today’s IELTS word from the academic word list is:




  • there are two main uses of this word: the adjective (a potential threat) and the noun (achieve your potential)
  • there is also a fairly common adverb: potentially
  • common phrases with the noun include “great potential”, full potential”, “show potential” and “have potential”
  • in academic usage, the adjective is a nice alternative for “possible”, so we can talk about “potential benefits” and “potential problems”
