Positive – IELTS word of the day

Today’s word from the academic word list is




  • the two forms of this word that you need are positive and positively
  • this is an extremely useful word for essays when you need to discuss advantages and disadvantages: you can use phrases such as “positive aspect of ” or “positive side” instead of repeating advantage
  • the opposite of this word is “negative” and it is quite common to talk of the “positive and negative aspects” of something
  • it is also common to use positive to mean “good” in phrases like ” a positive experience” or “a positive role model”
  • a second meaning of this word is “definite”: so we can talk about “taking positive action”
  • another meaning is “certain” as in “they are now positive that there is a link between smoking and lung cancer”
  • it is also possible to use positively to mean “very”, as in “this is positively dangerous”
