Top Tips for IELTS


Today’s word of the day is



This is a word that can be used in a variety of contexts. It is frequently used in mass communications and media (think television networks), it is also used in transport (think rail networks) and on a social/employment level  networking can also be very important.

Forms of the word

network: a verb

network: a countable noun

networking: an uncountable noun

Using the word


road/rail: The congestion is frequently caused lack of investment in the rail network.  

television/radio/telephone/communication; It is the duty of television networks to ensure that their programmes do not offend anyone.

local/national/personal: Nowadays people tend to have much larger personal networks thanks to sites such as Facebook.

old boy network: Many people still succeed in life due to the old boy network and the school they went to rather than any personal merit.

    What’s the meaning of old boy network

      I did think about putting in an explanation for this and then didn’t. My mistake. The old boy network is when you succeed in life because of who you know and not what you know.
