Today’s word of the day exercise is



This word is often used when discussing data and research. First of all you collect the information and then you need to interpret it. It is closely related to the more common word understand.

Forms of the word

interpret: a verb

interpretation: a noun

interpreter: a person

misinterpret: another verb

Using the word

results/data: This data needs to be interpreted before any conclusions are drawn from it.

behaviour/meaning/character etc: It is not always easy to interpret the precise meaning behind the words.

widely/often: The behaviour of teenagers is often misinterpreted.

Some common prepositions

as This type of behaviour can be interpreted as a sign that there is an underlying problem at home.

for Sometimes new migrants need someone to interpret for them when they arrive in a new country.

of One possible interpretation of these results is that more science needs to be taught at school.

open to The findings of the research are not clear and are open to a number of different interpretations.
