Today’s word from the Academic Word List is



The forms of this word are implement and implementation. Implement is mainly used as a verb meaning “to put into practice”, but it has a second use as a noun meaning “tool”.

The word is particularly useful when you need to discuss proposals and policies and it is used with all these words:

This policy needs to be implemented as a matter of emergency.

One solution would be to implement a programme to promote awareness of the dangers of alcohol abuse.

Many schools have implemented systems where parents help monitor students with problems in the classroom.

This proposal may not be implemented as it would require co-operation at an international level.

One problem is that those people who are responsible for implementing changes act too slowly and any reform is ineffecitve.

Local authorities need to develop and implement a strategy to deal with the industries in their area that continue to pollute the environment.
