Today’s word of the day is



This is a group of words that can be used when discussing not just the look of a person or a place but how people think about them/it.

Forms of the word

image: a countable noun

imagery: a less common uncountable noun

imagine: a common verb

Using the word

improve: Manchester, for instance, has improved its image considerably in recent years and is now seen as a cultural centre and not just an industrial city.

positive/negative: It would help if the media showed a more positive image of the ageing process.

public: Most multinationals are very concerned about their public image and have large publicity and marketing departments to ensure they are seen in a positive light.

self-image: Many teenagers suffer from having an extremely negative self-image and need to develop more confidence.

difficult etc: It is now difficult to imagine a world where technology does not play a central role in communication.
