Top Tips for IELTS

Formula – IELTS word of the day

Today’s word from the academic word list is:

  • this word is a scientific/mathematical word and indeed scientific and mathematical formula are common phrases
  • it is also used quite commonly in general English to mean a carefully worked out solution to a problem, formulas are typically “winning” or “successful”
  • an idiom worth learning is “there is no magic formula”  meaning that it is a complex problem with no easy solutions
  • less common variations of the word include formulate the verb (you formulate ideas), reformulate (you say something in another way) and formulation (something of a dictionary word)
  • there is an irregular plural formulae – though most modern teachers accept formulas (I certainly do)
