Focus – IELTS word of the day

Today’s word from the academic word list is



  • This is another verb/noun. The other form of the word you may need is focal
  • Some very common phrases/collocations are focus your attention/mind
  • Things may also come into focus or be brought into focus
  • It is quite normal to write of the focus of a piece of  research/article/essay
  • The adjective focal is most often used in the phrase focal point
  • The most common prepositions are of and on: upon is also sometimes used but is less common nowadays
  • There are alternative spellings focused and focussed
