Ensure – IELTS word of the day

Today’s word from the academic word list is

This is a commonly confused word – especially for speakers who come from a language background based on Latin where one word often does the job of 3 words in English ensure, assure and insure

This word means “to make certain”. For example, you need to ensure that you have your identity documents with you when you go to exam.

This word, and its noun form assurance, mean ”’promise”. For example, I assure you that your reading skills will improve if you read regularly.

This is perhaps the most technical word. It can probably best be explained by the idea of house insurance. Your house is valuable so you take out an insurance policy and pay insurance premiums so that the insurance company will reimburse you if your house should burn down.
