Today’s word of the day exercise is



Discrimination is very similar in meaning to prejudice and is most used in combination with sexual or racial and nowadays age. If you are looking for a handy synonym try this:

sexual discrimination = sexism

racial discrimination = racism

age discrimination = ageism

Forms of the word





Using the word 

illegal: It is now illegal to use discriminatory hiring practices.

against/in favour of: This is an example of discrimination against the needs of older people; it not only causes great suffering but unnecessary economic costs.

legislation: Discrimination against women has not disappeared despite this legislation.

sexual/racial/age etc: We need to examine in some detail the nature of age discrimination in the workplace.

on the grounds/basis that We can see that there was a rise in the number of complaints about discrimination on the grounds of sex or race respectively.
