Dimension – IELTS word of the day

The IELTS word of the day from the Academic Word List is



This word has both common academic/specialised and general uses. It can be used not just in maths/physics/engineering to describe shapes, but also in general essay writing to write about questions/issues as a fairly close synonym of side. This is not always the case, but it is most often used to describe problems/difficulties.

Common adjective combinations

A question can have a

moral/spiritual/moral/political/social dimension

Another  very common usage is when a problem/question becomes more complex. In this case, it may have a

added/extra/different/new dimension

Common verb combinations

The most common verbs are:

The two most common prepositions are:

to (most commonly used with “add”)



The plural form is used most commonly when the word is used to describe space:

the dimensions of the building
