Today’s word of the day exercise is



This is one of the more specialised words in the Academic Word List and is used mostly to describe legal obligations. It also used sometimes in medicine when you contract a disease.

Forms of the word

contract (verb and noun)

contractual (adjective)

Using the word


sign/agree: It is always good advice to read a contract before you sign it.

award/offer: The government does not always award large defence contracts to the highest bidder.

clause/terms: For example, the terms of some mobile phone contracts require consumers to stay with one supplier for up to two years.

under/according to: According to the terms of the contract the company is required to replace any defective parts.

obligations/duties: Unfortunately, not all companies honour their contractual obligations ire action to maternity leave.
