Affect – IELTS word of the day

Today’s word from the academic word list is



  • the forms of this word you need are affect, affective and unaffected
  • this is a highly important word for discussing cause and effect
  • the key point to note is that although it is pronounced in the same way, affect is a verb and is spelled differently from effect – which is primarily a noun
  • you should note that it is commonly used with adverbs such as “significantly”, “adversely” and “directly/indirectly”
  • it is also common to talk of the “factors” that affect “outcomes” or “decisions”
