Top Tips for IELTS

News from Dominic

I’m back – sort of.

An apology and an excuse

If you have been waiting for updates to the site I do apologise. I have been taking some time out from all things online – including emails I’m afraid – to give myself time to learn how to become a full-time dad. I’m a slow learner and it’s taken almost a whole year to get things sorted – though I suspect my daughter thinks that I still have a long way to go.

Expect updates soon

In the next month or so I will be beginning to produce new – and I hope better – material for the site. Except for one or two items though, this is unlikely to happen immediately. I first need to sort out some problems: for a start all the sound files have sadly gone missing and I also want to make the site easier to navigate. Then there are are a whole lot of mails and comments I need to sort through.

What can you expect?

I will of course be trying to help you out with new practice materials and ideas, but my real goal is to add lots more language and specifically language in context for all 4 skills.

The other main addition will be to try and add an IELTS help function that is more easily accessible. There is already a lot of this on the site but it is often hard to find as the advice comes in my replies to comments or the emails I receive. It would be much better if this was easier to find.

Many more links to good places to improve your language and exam skills and that includes teachers who can show you the way. Some of this will happen on my Facebook blog, which I am also re-activating. In many ways FB  – as the ultimate social medium – is the best way to share quick ideas and resources.

Do you have questions that need answered?

Do let me know if you have a specific problem that you think I can help you with.  All you need to do is contact me via a comment and I’ll try and help out. This is the IELTS help function I mentioned earlier. The more specific the question, the more likely I am to be able to help out. General questions such as “How can I get band 7.0 in writing?” are almost unanswerable.

What happens if I don’t get any updates?

This could well happen! Here are some possible reasons:

  1. My screen time nowadays is very limited
  2. A chickenpox epidemic
  3. I’m busy learning how to iron the fitted sheets
  4. The terrible twos
  5. I’ve been sent on a cookery course by my family
  6. The dog ate my laptop
  7. I’m still trying to delete all references on the site to how I post daily lessons

Often refer students to your site. Look back on the terrible twos with fondness.

Not there yet but the little darling has very dangerous genes . A terrible sense of foreboding just about covers it.

Me too. Refer all of my students to your site.

Wow…quite a scary schedule…can understand you perfectly, am going through the same routine right now…will wait for your excellent job as usual. I very much share the idea of the 4 language skills. Keep going and thank you!

Thanks for the information on updates! I use your website a great deal as it is so helpful. Regarding being a full-time dad – I’ve been there myself and appreciate the steep learning curve!

    Dear Dominic,

Maybe what you post on FB, please post it as well on your website.
You see, we could not access FB or any social media at the office.

Even if we’ve finished our work, or during break time, the fact that we’re using company computers, it’s all prohibited.
For varied reasons, sometimes we come to the office on weekends (though we have no work on weekends), still we could not access FB,
so we will be limited and could not avail of your new posts in FB.

Thanks a lot for taking this into consideration.

    More Power to you!

    Best regards,

I understand the problem. I can say that anything that I regard as really useful that I post on FB will also migrate onto the site at some point. I use FB as a quick way of trialling ideas. It’s relatively easy for me to measure what people have found useful by looking at likes and shares! Quite a lot of what I post there disappears. I don’t actually worry about that as whoever looks through a FB timeline?

This is not a question but a “thank you” note.

For concepts I referred to your site “only”. Of course I did a lot of practice from other sources (mainly listening practice from sample papers). Gave exam in Feb 2016 and got W – 7.5, S – 8, L – 8, R – 7. I know this may not be the best score but it serves my purpose.

All sections on your site are amazing. The only tip for someone who is preparing is to go through all pages of each section, it can be a bit overwhelming but that’s how you can benefit the most.

I’ve tried other sites but couldn’t find one single site which has content of this quality.

    Can’t thank you enough.

    Hi Dominic

First of all, congratulations for making it through the first year. I am sure you have some new bags under your eyes as trophies. Mostly, I would like to thank you for all the past lessons, which I use copiously in my teaching. I look forward to more and hope all is well. Thanks.

Hi Dominic. First of all, I would like to thank you for the excellence of your work. It is truly thanks to you that I was able to finally past my Ielts Academic. That being said I aplaude your decision to spend more time with your child(ren). When we are done here on earth what matter the most is to know we have invested greatly in their live too and of course to be prepared for what’s next.( that’s a whole other subject). Anyways I wish you the best in your beautiful quest .

    what dog?
I thought you were an exclusively cat family?

    • Dominic Cole August 23, 2016 at 10:59 am #

      We are!

This is just one more reason why dogs won’t enter the household – except that is until the little terror insists on one.

Working from home with children is something of an oxymoron!!!!! Believe me, I know, i’ve tried it! It takes some time but your following is patient and supportive of your new challenges!!! Best of luck!!

    • Dominic Cole August 25, 2016 at 8:16 am #

I’m going to have to scale back on my plans to produce courses proper – which is a shame. But the upside is that my family and childcare materials will be much better informed now!
