Part 1 writing in the academic module is often a problem for candidates for the very good reason that it is unfamiliar. Most IELTS candidates will have written many essays before they get to prepare for the exam – it’s something everyone goes through at school or university. In contrast, the task of analysing and writing a report on a chart or graph is quite often a new experience. So, while part 1 may be no harder than the essay, it may need more practice.
Where to practise – The Economist
The next problem is to find good practice material – it can be hard to find. I think I may be able to help out. Try The Economist magazine on the internet. It produces a daily chart that is very similar to part 1 IELTS – even better it gives you a short report that should help you with appropriate language. Here is the link
