Talking about likes in IELTS speaking

One of the most common tasks in IELTS speaking is to explain what you like or dislike. When you are preparing for the exam, it is sensible to learn how to talk about this in different ways. The big mistake is to continue to just use the word “like”.

Some basic variations

Here are some basic variations for you to consider:

notes

  1. You should note the different prepositions that follow “keen”, interested”, “fascinated” and ‘dream”
  2. Be careful with “I like” and “I’d like to”. I like is to talk about a habit, whereas I’d like is to talk about a future wish

Listen to the words in action

Try listening to this sample part speaking and take the simple quiz that goes with it. You can also read the transcript as you listen. I make no apologies for the amount of times I go “um”!

Sorry. Can’t you see the video?

I’m using a new site that looks that quite interesting but it’s no good if the video doesn’t appear. It’s ESL video here.

I’d be really grateful if you could tell if you can access it there. I’d like to decide whether to use that site again or not.

      Dominic
