Hi Dominic! I’d like to subscribe to get your daily word as I see that your tips and explanations are really of great help.

I’ve tried to do that from http://www.dcielts.com/ielts-vocabulary/daily-exercises/ but I get this message: “The feed does not have subscriptions by email enabled”

Do you you have any ideas what the cause may be?

    Thanks!

Buna!

    Hi Dominic,

First of all, I would like to express my profound thanks to your website and it contents. The way your material is organized and explained, made me to shoot on my target score. I was an user of your site for more than 3-4 months for my 2 attempts in IELTS. On my first attempt, I scored
L 7.5, R 6, W 6.5, S 7.5; Overall 7. But this was not sufficient for my immigration purpose. Hence on my second attempt, I paid close attention to the tips & details from your site. And here is my recent score L 7.5, R 7, W 7, S 7; Overall 7. Thanks again for the wonderful virtual learning opportunity. I pray to god to keep you sound & healthy throughout your life to benefit many people like me…

    • Dominic Cole July 22, 2011 at 10:39 am #

      Hi Mereke
Can I suggest you post this message on the Facebook page? It’s a great idea but I guess you are more likely to find people there than in a comment here which no one may read. There are about 670 people on the FB page at the moment and any message there will go directly to them.

Hi! could somebady tell me where the ‘overall’ is placed in an answer of writing task 1?

it is placed betwwen the introduction and tha main theme or in the end of the answer?

Does it have the same meaning with a conclusion?

    • Dominic Cole August 30, 2011 at 2:59 pm #

      Hi

The overall is your summary statement. It can either come at the beginning as part of a longer introduction or at the end as part of a conclusion. There are in fact few rules about how to do this. Task 1 has fewer conventions than an essay. The one thing to avoid is putting it both at the beginning and the end as that will be bad repetition.

      • alina August 30, 2011 at 6:16 pm #

Thanks! Your reply was crystal clear, however I didn’t manage to enter the blog earlier in the day to read it ( I have to admit that I don’t know much about blogging..). Thus I preferred to send a mail too, fearing of not receiving feedback.

Anyway this site is extremely helpful! Thanks again!

THANKYOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR WONDERFU SITE.HOW CAN I GO THROUGH ALL THE AWL THAT YOU HAD PUBLISHED.

    • Dominic Cole September 19, 2011 at 11:55 pm #

I certainly don’t recommend that you do it all at once. 5/6 a day should work fine. I’m currently reviewing the content on the site and I’m thinking of ways of making the AWL portion more user friendly and part of that will be publishing more review exercises.

      Hi

I’m back updating the site and you should find plenty of good vocab

  17. Valia November 11, 2011 at 12:15 pm #

    Dear Dominic,
This is the first time that I’m going to give exams about a degree in English.
I need this degree to have study abroad. Do you believe that there is hope to survive, with a grade 6,5? the examination will be in February.
(I’m willing to read too much. my level is close to “lower”)
    Thank you!

    • Dominic Cole November 27, 2011 at 7:22 pm #

Good question. It rather depends on your major. If it is “science/technology based you should be okay – though you will find it hard to start off with. if you are doing an arts/humanities based subject where more language is required you might struggle with all the reading. It then depends on how quickly you can improve your English during your course – 6.5 is not good enough to complete your degree.

The sad truth is that universities will take you and your money anyway – education has become business and “foreign” students are needed by universities for the money they bring.
