Talk about a television programme

This is an IELTS speaking lesson with a model answer with transcript on how to talk about a television programme. The notes for this lesson focus on:

how to structure your talk

useful vocabulary to describe television programmes

Read the question

A television programme

Describe a television programme you enjoy.

You should say:

What the programme is

How often you watch it

Who you watch it with

And explain why you enjoy that television programme

Understand the skills

As you answer this question you should remember that you want to:

speak for around 2 minutes

use a range of vocabulary

speak coherently and fluently

Suggested approach

There are different ways to do this part of the speaking but I suggest that:

you immediately say what you are going to speak about  – I’m going to tell you about

you cover all the points on the cue card – refer to the card as you are speaking

you come back to the main idea at the end – try using a question e.g. “Why do I like it?”

Possible problems

Sometimes there is not very much to say about one of the bullet points. In this case

say that you have nothing much to say about it

You may start talking about something not directly on the card

don’t worry – you can expand ideas not on the card

use a phrase such as “As I was saying” to come back to the main point

I’m going to tell you about one of my favourite tv programmes – it’s called Misfits. [Note I start clearly and well by saying exactly what I’m going to talk about]

It’s quite a hard programme to describe because it doesn’t really fit into any one genre. It’s in fact a series that I think was made by one of the smaller broadcasters in the UK – I can’t quite remember which one it was , but it certainly wasn’t the BBC. As I was saying, [Note that I come back to the main point by using this phrase] it combines elements of different genres. It has a bit of sic-fi or fantasy in it because all the main characters develop super powers such as the ability to read minds. But it isn’t at all serious as it’s also extremely funny. Part of the humour comes from the fact that the main characters are all young criminals and are sentenced to do community service – it’s quite anarchic to make that sort of person the hero I think.

But it isn’t just fun there’s real drama there too – what happens is that almost in the first scene the criminals kill their probation office – the person who is supposed to look after them – and they need to bury the body so that no one finds out. The scriptwriters did a brilliant job I think because there is real tension as the series goes on and I was constantly surprised by what happened next.

I didn’t actually see it when it was first broadcast because it was on a smaller channel that I don’t normally watch. [Note I don’t have much to say about when and with whom I saw it – so I say so] So I only found  out about it when I got a Netflix account. I loved it so much that I watched the first 3 series almost back to back in around a week – I was on holiday at the time and so had nothing else to do. I didn’t actually watch  Misfits with anyone else but I did tell my boss about it and he too became addicted to it.

Why did I like it so much? Well, I suppose because it made me laugh. [Note I give a short conclusion that directly answers the last question.]

Some part 2 questions are friendlier than others and give you a chance to use more topic vocabulary. If you get a question like this where you talk about a television programme you can use the 2 minutes preparation time to think of good words you can use:
