Top Tips for IELTS

speaking practice

Do you want IELTS speaking practice? I may have the answer for you. It can sometimes be quite difficult to find the opportunity to practice – the internet can help you. I thoroughly recommend Voxopop (previously known as Chinswing) to you. It is an ideal forum in which to practise your IELTS speaking.
What does it do?
It allows you to listen/read a question and then record your answer to it. Then other people can comment on what you have said and record their own answers. The new version of the program is excellent because it allows you to set up a group.
Why do I like it?
I believe it has 3 major strengths over alternative solutions such as Skype and, to some extent, face to face speaking practice:
  1. you can record and listen to yourself: this means you can hear where you go wrong and learn from your mistakes
  2. you can listen to other people and learn from their answers
  3. you are under pressure when you are in front of a microphone recording yourself: this parallels the pressure you will be under when you are in the exam
Anything not to like?
The big question is the privacy issue as to whether you are prepared to have other people listen to your speaking. If you are, then you can set up a private group where only invited people can listen to you.
Some practice
I have just set up a group called Dominic Cole’s IELTS speaking practice. For now, I have left it open to the world. You are welcome to record your answer to the question posted there. You will also find that I have also given some speaking tips in my message. You will also find morespeaking practice material on my website.
Good luck!

    Hi Mahmud

Thanks for the compliment and I’m also glad you talk about learning about the English language. This may be an “IELTS” blog, but really and truly it’s about learning English – which is in fact the best way to ace the exam.

    Hi,
    Thanks for your great site!!
I think you used to have a session about common IELTS speaking topics (education, transportation etc.) – is it gone? is it coming back? thanks.

      Hi
I’m still in the process of transferring materials across from my previous site – a few things got lost in the mix. I have just reposted some speaking practice materials from the British Council etc. I’ll try and post more about the topics soon.
