Featured video – IELTS essay introductions

One of the elements I have recently introduced into this blog is a featured video section. Some of these videos will be my own, but more will come from the resources of the internet. Much of the philosophy of this blog is to show how and where you can find good materials to study at home.

This video deals with the language of essay introductions. Why do I like it? It gives much the same advice as I give my own students – even if it uses somewhat different language. More specifically, I believe 4 points you should note are:
  1. The introduction is a paragraph like any other paragraph – it needs to be coherent and developed. This means more than 1 or 2 sentences.
  2. The introduction focuses on the question.
  3. The question comes in 2 parts: background information and immediate issue.
  4. How you start sentences is critical: one strategy is to start by learning some set phrases – as you get better, you can make your own.
