Purchase – IELTS word of the day

Today’s word from the academic word list is:

purchase

Notes

  • This is the “technical” word for buy. Typically, it is used for larger items (think houses and furniture) and in legal English. Don’t be afraid to use “buy” for everyday items.
  • The other common form of the word is purchaser; the formal equivalent of seller is vendor
  • Some common phrases include purchasing power, purchase price, sale and purchase and hire purchase (known in the US as payment in instalments)
  • It can be used as both a verb and a noun
