Philosophy – IELTS word of the day

Today’s word from list 3 of the academic word list is:



  • The forms of this word are philosophy, philosopher, philosophical and the less common philosophically and philosophise
  • In addition to the more academic usages where you may study politics and philosophy or moral philosophy, there are a number of more general English usages where the word means “way of thinking” or even policy:

have a philosophy of a simple/basic/different philosophy educational/economic philosophy

  • The adjective philosophical can have a special meaning where it means to accept something bad as in the phrase

to be philosophical about losing
