Today’s word of the day is

margin

Notes

This is a key word for academic IELTS candidates as it can be used to describe trends in academic task one where it means very slightly and is similar to fraction. It is also a common word in business where it is used to describe profit.

Forms of the word

margin: a countable noun

marginal: an adjective

marginally: an adverb

Using the word

rise: The amount of coffee sold rose marginally throughout this period.

fall:There was a marginal fall in the third quarter of the year in the amount of coffee sold.

change: There was only a magical change in the number of books bought in 2013.

margin for error: There is very little margin for error  when one chooses a degree course.

profit: Companies are typically more  concerned with their profit than investment in research and development.
