Today’s word from the academic word list is



  • One of the more unusual words in the academic word list, as it is quite topic specific
  • The forms of the word you need are injure, injury, injured and uninjured
  • Injuries can be minor, serious or even life-threatening
  • You suffer or sustain injuries and they can also be prevented or avoided
  • Injuries are not always physical, as you can injure someone’s pride, feelings or reputation
  • A related concept is health and safety – something that is increasingly important in Europe at least
  • A possible context for talking about injuries in IELTS is the fairly common topic of natural disasters
