Today’s word from the academic word list is:

initial

Notes

  • the key forms of this word you need to be able to use are: initial and initially, though you should also be able to use the related word initiate
  • initial is a close synonym of first and is particularly found in phrases such as the initial stage/cost
  • initially is similar in meaning to to begin with or at first 
  • initial does also work as a verb with the meaning of writing your initials on a document
  • if you are looking for a verb meaning to start, you need initiate – although this is quite a formal word and is used in phrases such as the government have initiated the process
