This is another of those words that can potentially use din task 1 writing to describe numbers. The derived form in excess of is particularly useful for more than.

Using the word

speed limit: Anybody who exceeds the speed limit in a built up area should instantly lose their driving licence.

hopes/expectations: Very often students exceed the expectations of their teachers.

in excess of: The number of people under 20 who played sport regularly was in excess of 2 million.

to excess: A worrying trend is how more and more young people drink alcohol to excess.

far/greatly/slightly etc: One difficulty is that demand far exceeds supply.

number/amount etc: One issue is that the number of candidates exceeds the places available at universities.

kind/grateful: Thank you once again. it was exceedingly kind of you to allow me to stay with your family over the summer.
