equivalent

Notes

This is a general purpose word that can be useful when one is making comparisons and it is a handy synonym for the same. It can also useful in task 1 writing when comparing numbers and times

Forms of the word

equivalent: an adjective

equivalent: a noun

equivalence: an uncountable noun

Using the word

to: For a typical family the cost of  holiday abroad is equivalent to a month’s salary.

amount/figure: The equivalent figures for youth crime show a sharp increase during this period.

period: We can see that fewer books were read by children under 10 during the equivalent period in 1992.

exactly/approximately/roughly/broadly: The rise in the number of females out of work during this period is approximately equivalent to the number of males who are unemployed.

qualification: Most employers nowadays ask for a degree or equivalent qualification when they are hiring.
