Emerge – IELTS word of the day

Today’s word from the Academic Word List is



The forms of this word that you need are emerge, emerging, emergence and emergency

It has a “physical” meaning of come out, but you are much more likely to use it with its more abstract meaning. To show this meaning, it is easiest to look at some examples;

Some common combinations include:

A further problem emerges when we consider the financial problems the elderly face

More evidence of the environmental damage that these industrial plants cause has emerged

On closer inspection, a  pattern of neglect emerges

Unfortunately, no consensus has emerged about the best way to tackle poverty in developing countries

There are two common prepositions:

No clear picture emerges from this

Sustainability has emerged as a vital issue
