Domestic – IELTS word of the day

Today’s word of the day is



There are a number of forms of this word: domestic, domesticate, domesticated and domestically. You should also note that domestic can also be used as a noun.


Domestic has two rather different usages:

  1. foreign and domestic
  2. as a close synonym of household

Common combinations with domestic

domestic industry/economy/market/flight and gross domestic product

domestic science/violence/responsibility/appliance

Domestic and domesticated

The difference between these two words is that domesticated is used to describe things (almost always animals) that were once wild
