Code – IELTS word of the day

Today’s word of the day exercise from the Academic Word List is



This is a word with a variety of meanings and uses. It has a general English use and is frequently used in telecommunication for addresses and telephone numbers, but it can also be used in more technical areas such as IT and law. Some of the more common variations are

the penal code

sort /Zip/country/area code and postcode (one word)

the highway code

bar code (the black and white stripes that you see on packaging in shops)

source code

code of practice (an idea found in most professions about the correct way to behave – it is a weaker idea than a law and is normally self-regulated)

dress code (what clothes you should wear to work for example)

A fairly common idiom is to crack the code, meaning to break the code.
