Challenge
Notes
This is another useful for when you need to discuss problems in both writing and speaking. If you have a problem, then you also face a challenge – the difference is that challenges tend to be positive, while problems are negative. One of the strongest collocations of challenge is enjoy!
Forms of the word
a challenge: this is the noun – note that it is countable
to challenge: it can also be a verb
challenging: this is a common adjective
challenged: this is the other adjective (remember the difference between -ing and -ed adjectives)
Using the word
These are some examples of how you can use the word:
enjoy: It may be quite difficult, but I do enjoy a challenge (spoken)
face: Many people face the challenge of having to learn a new language when they move abroad. (note the of)
pose/present: While this does undoubtedly present a challenge, there are possible solutions.
tackle/meet/rise to: It is important to tackle the challenge to the environment presented by increasing levels of pollution. (note the to)
job/task/question: One reason why so many teachers are leaving the profession, is that teaching is a very challenging job.
Learning a new language is an overly challenging task, but I always enjoy challenged jobs.

The job is challenging but you are challenged by it. These two adjectives work in exactly the same way as bored and boring. If I am boring, you become bored
Studying for the IELTS exam while having another full-time job is considered a challenge for me, but I always do my best to win the challenges !! 🙂
