Here is the next in my series of sample IELTS essays. It is not a perfect essay, it is not meant to be. Rather it is intended to show what is possible.  If you wish, please download it. To help you I have also included two vocabulary exercises.

Range of vocabulary

Please note the range of vocabulary used. One common error in IELTS writing is that candidates repeat the same words over and again. This is a mistake that can be avoided if you remember to put word repetition on your personal editing checklist.

Interactive test on family vocab

The best words for IELTS are often not long words, but short correct words. These include “collocations” or word combinations. These may look simple, but that does not matter: a simple word used well is much better than a long word used badly. Before you read the essay, you may want to try this simple quiz on family vocabulary collocations:

Sample essays can be good, but only if you use them in the right way. It is a serious mistake to “learn” them. But you can learn from them. Here is one way. This exercise asks you to fill in some gaps in the essay. All the gaps relate to family word combinations: exactly the right sort of language for IELTS:
