How many is asking for a length of time and since is a point in time. This is an important mistake to understand: you are not just looking for words, you are looking for meanings of words. The meaning of words can include their grammar. Be very careful. The correct answer is of course "a few years ago". The answer in the book was “since 2006″: this has to be wrong as you cannot answer the question”How many years ago” with “since”.
